Two people do the same workout, why does one lose weight and the other not?

Ok so my boyfriend goes and works out with his buddies twice a week and they do the exact same thing. Boyfriend is 5′4 and 120lbs and his friend is 6′1 and started at 255 but is down 15lbs already. Not that he wants or needs to lose weight, just curious about the science, why is his friend losing weight and he’s not?
